Spanish
Intent
At Austwick Primary School, we enable pupils to understand Learning a foreign language is part of the primary National Curriculum and is a requirement for all children within key stage 2 (KS2). Austwick Primary School has adopted a whole school approach to the teaching of Spanish to all KS1/2 pupils.
Aims
Incorporating the programmes of study from the national Curriculum, our Foreign Languages curriculum aims to:
-
Provide learning opportunities, in line with the vision of our school, that enthuse, engage and motivate children to learn and foster a sense of respect, curiosity and wonder for different cultures and languages.
-
Develop the confidence and competence of each child in the foreign language they are learning and for them to be passionate, curious and confident about their own foreign language learning abilities when they finish the primary school phase of their education.
-
Develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the 5 key language skills necessary for learning Spanish:
Speaking
Listening
Reading
Writing
Grammar
-
Ensure that pupils of all abilities develop solid foundations in these key language learning skills - properly preparing them for the next stage of their language learning journey. These skills will develop children’s ability to understand what they hear and read and enable them to express themselves in speech and writing.
-
Extend their knowledge of how language works and explore the similarities and differences between the foreign language they are learning and English.
-
Strengthen their sense of identity through learning about culture in other countries and comparing it with their own.
We use Language Angels to deliver the National Curriculum for Foreign Languages throughout Key Stage 2. The scheme of work is well-sequenced, with a clear progression in knowledge, skills, concepts and vocabulary and links to other curriculum subjects. The scheme of work provides resources to support teaching and learning in Foreign Languages.
Implementation
Key Stage 1
Although there is no statutory requirement to teach foreign languages in Key Stage 1, Years 1 and 2 are introduced to greetings, numbers, colours, seasons, my home, my town and various animals and transport. The lessons are planned using Language Angels in a creative way through songs, videos, listening and repeating activities. Spanish is taught in lessons for a maximum of 30 minutes.
Key Stage 2
Spanish is taught in a whole-class setting by the subject leader and Class 1 teacher. The lessons are planned using the Language Angels scheme of work. The lessons are designed to motivate, captivate and interest children from the first moment. They have clear, achievable objectives and incorporate different learning styles. SEN children have access to the curriculum through variation of task, grouping or support from an adult. Spanish is taught in 45 minute lessons
Spanish can also be revisited in short sessions throughout the week to consolidate knowledge and ensure new language is retained.
Impact
The children will have knowledge and skills that are built upon throughout KS1 and KS2 in our school. They will have knowledge and skills that they can recall and build upon. Children will be taught to listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding; explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words; and engage in conversations. They will have knowledge of a broader vocabulary and have developed their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including using a dictionary.
The impact of the curriculum will be reviewed (throughout the year) through observations and assessments of pupils’ learning and through pupil discussions about their learning, to identify how much understanding of basic grammar, vocabulary and comparisons with the English language they have gained and remembered over time.
This helps to target next steps in learning as well as informing the subject leader of progress and skills/knowledge still to be embedded. Spanish is also monitored by the subject leader throughout the year in the form of a collection of evidence including: (photos), children's workbook (displaying activities linked to speaking, listening, reading and writing) and looking at outcomes measured against age-based progression and pupil interviews to discuss their learning. This tangible evidence aids understanding and establishes the impact of the teaching taking place.
